How scoring works in Catan

  1. Settlement: 1 victory point each (you start with 2 and can build up to 5).
  2. City: 2 victory points each (upgrade a settlement; up to 4 cities).
  3. Longest Road: 2 victory points for the player with the longest continuous road of at least 5 segments. It moves if someone builds a longer road.
  4. Largest Army: 2 victory points for the first player to play 3 knight cards; it moves to anyone who plays more knights.
  5. Victory Point development cards: 1 point each; keep them hidden until they win you the game.
  6. The first player to reach 10 victory points during their own turn wins immediately.

Good to know

  • This calculator is for the base game (and the 5–6 player extension). Seafarers, Cities & Knights and other expansions add extra VP sources you can add to the VP-card field.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get 10 points in Catan?

Combine settlements (1 VP), cities (2 VP), Longest Road (2 VP), Largest Army (2 VP) and Victory Point development cards (1 VP each). A common winning mix is 2 cities, 3 settlements, and one special card or VP card.

Do you have to have exactly 10 points to win Catan?

No – you win as soon as you have 10 or more victory points during your turn. Points reached during another player’s turn only count once your own turn begins.

Can two players share Longest Road in Catan?

No. If a tie for longest road occurs, the current holder keeps the card; if nobody held it, it stays unclaimed until someone has the single longest road.
